Fundraising, Loss of a Long time Supporter, Invitations and More Updates

Hello everyone, 

 

Well, it is already almost the end of the May long weekend. I hope you've had a chance to enjoy the great weather this weekend. We are loving this weather out here but WOW the mosquitos are bad right now.  

 

Michelle and I had the opportunity to go on a missions trip to Ireland and it was amazing. Huge thank you to all of our Year Round Staff and Seasonal Leadership Team for the different ways they pitched in to take care of our children while we were away. Now for a quick update. 

 

Fundraiser - A Night Under the Stars

 

 

On May 15 we held our annual fundraiser. The theme was A Night Under the Stars. The middle of the Lodge Dining Room was transformed into a fire pit and lights were strung throughout the Lodge to give the feeling of truly being out around a camp fire and under the stars. Huge thank you to Office Manager Chantel for her incredible work in organizing the event. Thank you to Assistant Director Collin (Deuce) for his great job mc'ing the event and "showing off" his auctioneer "skills." Thank you also to all of the kitchen staff for the incredible meal and to the Seasonal Leadership and Year Round Team for all your work in putting this event together. AND, thank you to the Board Members who were able to make it out for the event. 

 

You can still participate in the our fundraiser by purchasing a star.  Similar to the purchase a leaf campaign that we ran in 2016, you can purchase a star that will be displayed in our lodge. We can write your name, someone else's name, a blessing, a prayer or whatever you like on the star. Please see below for the details on the cost for each star.

 

Up to $100 - White Star

From $100 to $500 - Silver Star

From $500 to $1000 - Gold Star

Over $1000 - Shooting Star

 

Again some of the projects you are supporting include the installation of our new Boat Launch, which was completed last week, the repairing of our Gabion Wall around our island, the installation of a new streaming device so we can live stream Fireside and other events, impact matts in the kitchen and the renovation of our Brown Cabins. And, you can also support our Staff Bursary Program or our Jar Jar's Kids Campaign to help kids come to camp who otherwise couldn't afford to do so. Thanks again for your ongoing financial support of Camp Chestermere. 

 

Passing of Ed Bunn

 

 

There was a noticeable absence at this year's fundraiser. Edmund Bunn, born June 4th, 1931, was an incredible long time supporter of Camp Chestermere. Ed passed away on Sunday April 29th, 2018, at the age of 86.  He is survived by his wife Marilyn, his brother Kenneth, and children Bill, Lynn, David, and Judith, 17 Grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Edmund Bunn was devoted to his family, his wife and four children. He invested much of his time at his church Bethel Baptist (now Abundant Life) where he led Bible studies, served both as a deacon, and an elder and was chair of the church council. His calm demeanour and even temperament earned him the nickname “Steady Eddie.”  Ed Bunn has been involved with Camp Chestermere for many years and his children and grand children have been campers and staff as well. Ed was featured in our Help Us Grow video that was made a couple of years ago and one of our triplexes carries his family name. He served at Camp Chestermere as a Cabin Leader and later on the Camp Board. As a Cabin Leader, he was known as “Eagle” or “Eddy the Eagle.” Though he did occasionally experience the better things in life, he never lost sight of the value or significant of the simple things: a cup of coffee, a nicely cooked egg, or fresh bread with a little too much butter. In all, his life was simple. He married one woman. Raised one family. Lived in one house. Worked one career. Attended one church, and worshipped one God. And this simplicity is radiant in our times. We count ourselves blessed to have known this man, teacher, father, friend, and husband.

 

Redberry Bible Camp and Action International Ministries

 

We had a cool opportunity this year to partner with another camp right at the start of Seasonal Leadership joining us. At the start of May, Redberry Bible Camp, from Saskatchewan,  joined us for a week and it was great to have them here. We were able to share ideas, compare notes, and have incredible conversations with like minded individuals. We also had a missions team here at the same time from Action international Ministries. They held a week long training in preparation for their trip to the Philippines. It was great to start off our summer preparation by working with another camp and an international missions team.  

 

Invitation to be Involved

 

There are always opportunities for you to be involved with volunteering at Camp Chestermere. As we said a number of months ago, our goal is to have volunteers on site 2 - 3 days a week. We need volunteers to help with minor construction projects, cooking in the kitchen, helping in the office, cleaning, and a variety of other tasks as well. One of our staffing positions for the summer that is funded by FCSS United Way Chestermere is our Volunteer Coordinator. As we get closer to the summer camping season our need for volunteers, especially in the kitchen and boat driving, increases. If you would like to be involved in volunteering then please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Darcy (Brother Bear) and volunteercoordinator@campchestermere.com. 

 

Hearing God Seminar

 

Our Year Round Team and Seasonal Leadership Team are working with Board Member Kara (Snow) from Northwest Community Church on a six week seminar called Hearing God. This is an incredible blessing to our team and we are so thankful to Northwest Community Church for giving Kara the time and space to do this work with our team. Great preparation for the summer. Thanks Kara and Northwest Community Church

 

Partnerships

 

We continue to explore new community partnerships as we look for ways to grow and expand Camp Chestermere. We are currently having some great conversations with the Chestermere Rotary Club about ways we can work together moving forward. We were very thankful and blessed that 3 members from the Chestermere Rotary Club attended our fundraiser. Partnerships are an important and vital extension of the work we do at Camp Chestermere and we are excited for the new opportunities that are arising. 

 

Well, that's it for this update. Lot's of great preparation is happening for the summer. This 2018 Seasonal Leadership team is AMAZING. They are bringing some cool new ideas to the table and we can't wait for the summer to get started. Well, we can because there is a lot of work to do but you know what I mean. Get your children registered for Day and Overnight Camps as they are filling up fast. Spread the word for others to do the same.
