First Update January 2018
Happy New Year everyone,
Well, January is just underway.... and by that I mean we are almost half way through January already. How is that possible??? This week was our first real week back in the office. While we did officially reopen on January 2, after a much needed week off, there were a couple of days last week where we closed the office early and the Year Round Team headed over to my house to watch the World Juniors Team Canada games. Very excited that Team Canada was able to win gold this year.
As I mentioned in our last Weekly Update before Christmas, we are in the process of hiring our Seasonal Leadership Team for 2018. We currently have over 35 people who have applied for 11 positions. This is a great.... and awful problem to have as it means that we will have to unfortunately say no to some very qualified people. Please pray for wisdom as we make these decisions and please pray for those who have applied as well. If you know someone who may still wish to apply, or if you would like more information about the positions that are available, then please go to https://www.campchestermere.com/employment. The deadline to apply is January 19, 2018. We hope to announce our 2018 Seasonal Leadership Team by January 26, 2018.
Speaking of staffing we have some announcements to make. The first is some sad news. We are saddened to announce that Sherry Nickel (Curry) has decided to step down from her position as Kitchen Manager. Sherry has done some incredible work for Camp Chestermere and she will be missed. On behalf of all those who benefitted from the work that Sherry did in the kitchen I want to say a very heartfelt thank you. We wish Sherry the best in her future endeavours.
Related to this though, we are pleased to announce that we have hired Erik Davis (Baloo) to be Kitchen Lead and Guest Services Coordinator. He started back in October in the this role but will now be taking it on as a full time position. Erik has been doing an incredible job and we are very happy to have him on the team.
New Program Announcement
We are VERY, VERY, VERY excited to announce a new... well expanded... program for Summer 2018. Thanks to an amazing grant from the Chestermere FCSS and United Way, we are pleased to announce a program called. Helping All Campers Succeed. We will be hiring 4 individuals, 2 guys and 2 girls, to work with children who have special needs. These staff members will start in the third week of June. When they first arrive they will be contacting families who have registered and setting up meetings before the child comes to camp to develop a plan for working with these children. These individuals will be working with campers in both the Day and Overnight program at a ratio of 1:1 or max 1:3. Office Manager Chantel is attended a session on Friday January 12 at the Rec Centre called FRIDAY NIGHT FRIENDS ACTIVITY NIGHT. Chantel will be promoting our new program at this event.
Staff Meeting on January 9, 2018
The Year Round Team met for their monthly staff meeting on Tuesday January 9, 2018. It was a fantastic meeting. One of the most exciting parts of the meeting was the goal setting we did. The team has set some ambitious and exciting goals and is very excited to get to work on them. Some of the things we will be working towards in 2018 include rebuilding a BB Gun Wall, improving the welcoming of families when they first arrive at the beginning of the week, and increasing the feedback received about our programming. One of my favourite quotes from a staff member about their takeaway from our staff meeting was: "I Feel like we are going somewhere or at least walking towards something even if we don’t fully know what that is. At least it is forward. It’s encouraging." I love working with this team.
We have been very blessed lately to have more and more people coming and volunteering on a consistent basis. We have a couple of people who for the past number of months have been coming once a week to volunteer. This is a huge blessing to us. So, at our staff meeting on Tuesday, we made it a goal for 2018 to have 3 volunteers here per week. So, if you would like to help us achieve this goal then please get in contact with us asap. We have jobs for volunteers for pretty much everything from cleaning, to renovations, to admin work, and more. If we know in advance when you would like to come then we can design tasks for you. So, if you would like to be involved then just contact the camp and we will get you set up right away. Thanks in advance.

We continue to work hard at improving things around the camp. This week we are finishing the flooring in Blue Triplex. Thanks again to Alberta Hardwood Flooring for their generous donation that allowed us to redo the floors in all of the Triplexes. Huge thank you to Site Coordinator Vic (Papa Smurf) and volunteers Zak Davis, Chase (Stokes) and CLTD Leader Alex (Crumpet) for getting this work completed.
We are in search of some options for impact mats or flooring in the kitchen. If you have any leads, thoughts, or ideas on this then please contact Site Coordinator Vic (Papa Smurf) or myself and we would love to talk to you.
And finally, we installed a new projector in the Chap and so now there is a projector and screen on either side of the fire place. This has been a long time dream here and thanks to a grant from FCSS and United Way Chestermere, this dream has become a reality. It looks amazing.
Lots of other things happening as well. We continue to build relationships with our community. I attended a cheque presentation this week for the 2018 grants from FCSS and United Way Chestermere, Assistant Director Collin (Deuce) attended Camp Days at Ambrose and Prairie, and Office Manager Chantel (Lilac) is on her way to a promotional event tonight.
Please continue to keep us in our prayers. Blessings on you and your families in 2018.
